Any golf pro will tell you that you should incorporate a regular, but flexible set of golf practice routines into your golf practice sessions. Here are a few golf practice tips and advice you can apply every time you hit the range!

Golf Practice Routines Mindset

1. Practice with focus–define exactly what you want to get out of your practice routines before you practice.
2. To lower your golf scores, devote half or more of practice routine time to short game (pitching, bunkers, chipping and putting).
3. Have a different mindset when you play vs. when you practice. When you practice, focus on golf fundamentals and ingraining the proper golf swing movements in all phases of your game, when you play the game, resist analysis and focus only on the target of your next shot.

Develop Consistent Practice Routines Plan

To develop consistency in your golf swing, you should also be consistent with your golf practice routines and stick to a consistent overall golf practice routine plan with flexibility built into the routine to accommodate problem areas or other targeted areas of your golf game. Here is a sample golf practice routine:

1. Start with a pre-swing warm up including light stretching and tempo drills.
2. Spend a few minutes to rehearse and instill the key positions of your full golf swing in slow motion from backswing and top of backswing to impact, release and finish positions. Practice these golf swing positions at various speeds until you have a nice fluid swing that feels natural.
3. Set up an alignment station to ensure your golf shots are on target.
4. Loosen up by performing short pitch golf shots and chip golf shots.
5. Practice your full swing mechanics with select golf drills for four shots to help install the fundamentals of the golf swing.
6. Then, for the next four shots, carry out your normal golf swing emphasizing a smooth, fluid motion.
7. Continue alternating between four practice shots (with focus on drills and mechanics) and four shots for the fluid swing.

Proper mindset and consistent practice plan will boost your golf skills and help you to become expert golfer in the practice range.

There is always the temptation to rush to a green and simply start hitting balls. For people that want to have a bit of fun on the driving range, then this is fine. Golf requires mental and physical attributes to successfully play. There is a saying “practice makes perfect”, well that is partially true. If you desire perfection, you should choose another game. In golf, there is no such thing as perfection. The correct statement would be perfect practice makes perfect.

Why practice doesn’t work

I have seen many golfers go out and hit balls all day striving to hone their game down. However, when they go out and play a round of golf, things did not come out the same as when they practiced. The big question is why?

Most golfers do not practice with a purpose. In order to develop the muscle memory, you need to slow down and watch every ball you hit. You need to hit each ball with a purpose.

Consider hitting only one club at each practice session. Take a break between clubs allowing each club to be a practice session. This will help develop muscle memory for the club, which is the basis for practicing with a purpose.

Purposeful practice works

Golf is divided up in four parts. The first part is your drive, next will be your approach shot, then your chip shot (your short game), and finally your putting.

#1 Drive

Hit ten balls with your driver pausing in between each shot giving your self a mental picture of what you desire before hitting the ball. Consider distance and direction.

Work your way down the driving clubs, from the driver to the three iron, hitting ten balls each, pausing and visualizing each shot. When you finish all the driving clubs, consider which club gave you the most distance and the best accuracy. This club will be your club of choice on you next round of golf you play.

#2 Approach

Now practice using the same technique on your clubs from, 4 iron to 8 iron. The club you hit best will be your club for the approach shot, again note the distance for that club.

#3 Chip Shot/ Short Game

Your short game uses the 9 iron to wedge. These clubs will be from 110 yard in. When practicing, determine which club you hit best for 100 yards, which club can you hit best for 50 yards, and which is best for 25 yards. This will be crucial so practice these shots.

Remember to pause between shots to visualize each shot. Practicing ten shots each will be the easiest to determine which club will have the best percentage of accuracy.

#4 Putting

Use a practice ball that has a line drawn around it so you can see how straight you are hitting the ball. You want the ball to roll straight on every put. Your distance and speed will come to you if you can hit the ball squarely and thus make the ball roll straight.

Putting it all together

Practicing in this manner will give you a chance to improve, if you take that information you gained to the course. Using the information you gained from practice, you can divide up the course you are going to play to fit your best average for the clubs you practice with.

The pros use statistics on every club they hit, so should you. Don’t just hit balls, hit balls with a purpose and record your results. This will give you an advantage over the players who don’t really know their hitting performance. When you do this, you will only have to use 4 to 6 clubs making golf much easier to play.

It doesn’t matter if you play baseball, hockey, soccer, tennis, you get a great deal of satisfaction when strike the ball solidly.



Making solid contact with the ball is even more important in golf, where the slightest mishit can cause the ball to go anywhere but where you want it to go.



As with anything that you want to be good at, consistent ball striking in golf requires practice, practice and more practice.



Although you may not believe it, right after you finish a round is the best time to practice. All of the mistakes that you made during your time on the golf course are fresh in your mind and your body is still warm and ready to go. If you don’t take the time to work on the shots that give you the most trouble means that your game will continue to suffer.



One of the keys to getting the most out of your practice is to create ‘real’ situations. Ideally, you want to mirror what happened during your round.



Work on hitting golf balls from every type of bad lie you can recreate. If you spend an extra 20 or 30 minutes after a round practicing one or two of those errant shots, you will be able to make adjustments that will translate to better play the next time you are out on the course.



Another method you can use to prepare for your next round is to visualize a round of golf during lunch break, on your way to or home from work.



Picture yourself on your home course stepping up to the first tee and striking the ball down the center of the fairway. Get into the flow of your round in your mind and see yourself hitting each shot perfectly. Visualize your body flowing tension free through each shot.
If you know anything about Olympic athletes, then you know that much of their practice is visualization. Don’t get me wrong, they spend many hours practicing the physically, but before they start an event, they spend time seeing themselves perform flawlessly.



When you are practicing, don’t just hit golf balls, take the time to visualize what you want the ball to do. Take a break between swings and picture your next swing as if you were hitting a shot on the golf course.



This will help you avoid mental and physical exhaustion. Use the time to process what you’ve learned or accomplished. Remember, you’re not out there to hit a hundreds of shots. Instead you are trying to hit 20-30 solid shots. Rather than shagging a large bucket of balls and just pounding shots, get a small bucket and focus on hitting the sweet spot with each swing.



Here is a great golf swing practice tip:



Place two tees a couple of inches apart in the ground.



Use your favorite iron, I like to use a shorter iron for this.



Start with partial swings and work your way up to full swings as you get better at avoiding the tees. Spend some time doing this and you will soon be hitting the ball more solidly. The best part is, you can do this in your backyard.



When you hit that perfect shot, don’t forget how it feels. Burn that feeling into your head and internalize it. I know from experience that the feeling is effortless and there is nothing like it.

1. The first is to observe everything that happens. Sometimes a wrong shoulder turn or a poor follow through destroys everything. This can be improved by hiring an instructor to help out and by looking in the mirror.

2. The player must remember that the hands should be relax at all times. Putting strain here will make it more difficult to make a good shot. The arms are an extension of something bigger so the power must come from the abs and the hips since these two are the largest muscles in the body.

3. Hitting the ball as quickly as possible may cause the ball to go too far to the left or right. The best way to make sure it hits dead center is to go with the flow. Some player use a heavier club during practice and this drill may also help the individual avoid making that shot.

4. It is not only the upper body that will determine a good shot. Having the feet firmly in place on the ground is also important. Balance is key from the moment the club starts from the back all the way until it passes the player’s left shoulder.

5. In some sports like baseball or tennis, it pays to keep an eye on the ball. The same thing also applies in golf since this is the only way for the club to make good contact with the ball, sending it ever closer the hole.

These simple tips more or less will make the person a better golfer. The key to getting this right is consistency, which has to be done regularly so this will become automatic in the tournament.

Let me ask you this: Which golf club do you practice with the most when you go to the driving range?

If you said that you practice the most with your driver, then you are like most golfers who play the game today. When you visit a driving range it’s hard not to notice that the majority of people hitting balls, are doing it with their drivers. Now granted, you do need to practice your driver in order to get better with it. I’m not here to say you shouldn’t practice with your driver. But if you want to improve your game, no matter what skill level you are at, their is one aspect of the game that we all need to focus on. See, I used to think that since my driver is what I’m going to use on the 1st tee box, then I need to practice this club the most.

But then I came across this great golf tip!

“PRACTICE BACKWARDS”

WHAT!?

Ok, let me explain. Did you realize that if the golf course you are going to play is a par 72, then half of the score related to par, is going to come from putting?

Yes, if you were to reach every green in regulation, and you wanted to shoot par, you would have to make 36 putts? That’s 18 holes, 2 putts on each green. Now, that’s if you were able to shoot even par. However, the majority of us are high handicap golfers and we loose a lot of strokes on the putting green. How? By 3 and 4 putting. How many of you 2 putt every time? Probably not too many. So what part of your game do you think you should focus on 1st? You got it! PUTTING. Doesn’t it make you sick when you reach a par 4, for example, in two, and then you 3 putt for a bogey! You could’ve had a beautiful 275 yard drive, and a sweet 135 yard second shot, but it won’t matter, because you 3 putted. What’s even worse, is if you 4 putted. OUCH!!

So then, you should focus your practice first of all on the putting green. Then work your way backwards.

Once you have become good at putting, then you should focus next on chipping. Chip with your wedges, your 9-iron, your 8-iron, or even your 7-iron. Watch how high the ball goes with each club. See how far the ball rolls once it lands on the putting surface. Practice long chip shots, and short chips shots. In time, you will know which clubs to use in any given situation, so that you can get your ball close to the flag.

Once you have found the feel for chipping, then move on to pitching. Practice from 100 yards and in with your wedges and even your short irons. Hit high shots that land on the green and stop. Hit low shots that land short and roll on the green. Learn to use quarter shots, half shots, then full shots. If you learn to hit good shots from 100 yards and in, it won’t take long but you will find that you will be hitting more greens in regulation, and you might even make those birdie and eagle putts that we all wish we had more of.

So, in conclusion, we’ve learned that it is important that you practice using your driver. But I hope that I was able to convince you that if you really want to make some solid improvement in your golf game, it’s better to focus your time on this GOLF TIP FOR BEGINNERS: PRACTICE BACKWARDS.
